Guiding how we support people, whānau, and communities across Aotearoa.

Momentum’s mahi is grounded in the belief that reintegration is most successful when people have access to opportunities to recognise their potential, build confidence, and develop the skills, capabilities, and connections they need to move forward. Our values reflect the principles that guide how we champion education and social integration initiatives for people in prison and those serving community-based sentences. They shape how we build partnerships, strengthen community belonging, and contribute to safer, more resilient whānau and neighbourhoods across Aotearoa.

A strengths-based, future-focused approach

Our mahi is grounded in recognising and building on people’s strengths, values, and aspirations. We support individuals to develop self-value, emotional intelligence, effective communication, and achievable goals. By focusing on the future rather than past offending, we help people develop the confidence and capability needed for long-term reintegration and wellbeing.

Fostering connection and belonging

Reintegration is most successful when people can connect with their children, whānau and community in healthy, sustainable ways. We support initiatives that build emotional awareness, confidence and communication skills that strengthen relationships and support reconnection. When individuals are more present with their whānau and able to contribute positively to their community, they gain a stronger sense of belonging that supports stability, wellbeing and reduces the likelihood of reoffending.

Supporting practical change and real-world skills

We focus on what helps people thrive in everyday life. We support initiatives that build practical capabilities such as employment readiness and money-management skills, emotional wellbeing, and goal setting. Our approach is strengths-based and accessible, ensuring people gain tools they can apply immediately in their daily lives to take clear steps towards their goals and greater stability and independence.

Commitment to Te Tiriti and equity

We recognise the ongoing impacts of colonisation and the over-representation of Māori in the justice system. Guided by Te Tiriti o Waitangi, we support initiatives that strengthen cultural identity, promote equitable access to opportunities, and create safer, more culturally responsive reintegration pathways. Our commitment is to approaches that uphold mana, reflect tikanga, and contribute to equitable outcomes for Māori and all communities.

Accountability, integrity, and continuous learning

We take responsibility for the impact of our work. We listen to participants, whānau, lived-experience voices, Corrections staff, and community partners. We use feedback and data to refine our approach, strengthen programme quality, and ensure our mahi makes a meaningful impact on reintegration outcomes and community safety.

Working in partnership toward better futures

We believe long-term change happens when communities, organisations, and systems work together. Our focus is on building strong partnerships that expand opportunities for people leaving prison to access the support, skills, and relationships they need to create stable, crime-free lives. By collaborating across sectors, we help ensure that individuals, their whānau, and their communities can thrive.
