Keeping whānau connected through stories

Turning the Page is an initiative that helps parents in prison stay connected with their tamariki through recorded stories. Whānau connections are a powerful source of motivation for positive change. Turning the Page provides a simple, meaningful way to continue nurturing that connection while the parent is in prison.

Why this initiative matters

Through our work with people in the criminal justice system, we consistently hear from parents that their children are their strongest motivation for positive change — shaping goals around wellbeing, financial stability, and reconnection with whānau. This shows how maintaining and strengthening family bonds plays a crucial role in supporting reintegration and reducing reoffending.

How it works

The impact

This initiative helps parents maintain a positive, meaningful connection with their tamariki while they’re apart. Sharing stories supports emotional wellbeing on both sides, encourages ongoing engagement, and gently supports literacy development for parent and child. These small but powerful interactions play an important role in keeping whānau connected and have a positive impact on reintegration and reducing reoffending.
